Golden State road trip goes in half through California and later drives via Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado or alternatively via Nevada, Arizona, Utah and also finishes in Colorado. Alternatively, means that you have two options to choose after two weeks of travelling: the north path or the south one. The main difference between the north and the south is that the north one goes via Canyonlands in Utah while the south path drives through historic Route 66 in Arizona and New Mexico. Both ways are worth seeing and are briefly presented below. If you are not limited by the time and have the sufficient budget then both ways are doable. Recommended time for this road trip is at least 3 weeks during which you will travel ca. 2 700 miles. itinerary - Part 1
Alcatraz, San Fancisco
Day 1-3: San Francisco
Visiting the most tolerant city in the US. Golden Gate, Lombard street, Alcatraz are just the top of the iceberg what you can see in this cosmopolitan city.
Day 4: Yosemite NP or Big Sur Coast
'Not just a great valley, but a shrine to human foresight, the strength of granite, the power of glaciers, the persistence of life, and the tranquility of the High Sierra.'
Tunnel log, Sequoia National Park
Day 5-6: Sequoia & Kings Canyon - Land of Giants
'This dramatic landscape testifies to nature's size, beauty, and diversity - huge mountains, rugged foothills, deep canyons, vast caverns, and the world's largest trees.'
Big sur coast, California
Day 7-10: Swirl, sniff, sip in in wine country + Santa Barbara beaches  
After intensive exploring part now is the time for the relax while visiting some vineyards and later spend a couple of days at the Pacific Ocean.

Day 11-13: L.A. with Santa monica baech
Some mixture of wandering around the city and laziness combined with sunbathing on spacious beaches of L.A. 
Day 14: Death Valley - Hottest, Driest, Lowest
'In this below-sea-level basin, steady drought and record summer heat make Death Valley a land of extremes. Yet, each extreme has a striking contrast. Towering peaks are frosted with winter snow. Rare rainstorms bring vast fields of wildflowers. Lush oases harbor tiny fish and refuge for wildlife and humans. Despite its morbid name, a great diversity of life survives in Death Valley.'
Day 15: Las Vegas (shopping day), Hoover dam

Day 16: Grand Canyon - south rim
'Unique combinations of geologic color and erosional forms decorate a canyon that is 277 river miles (446km) long, up to 18 miles (29km) wide, and a mile (1.6km) deep. Grand Canyon overwhelms our senses through its immense size.'
Day 17: Arizona and historical route 66
Starting the day with Red Rock Country and later drive through Arizona and its endless landscape via route 66.
Petrified forest
Day 18: Petrified forest, Santa Fe
Visiting a mass concentration of petrified trees and other fossils with more than 225 million years old, which decorate pastel striped wilderness of Painted Desert. For the night a good place will be Santa Fe, a peaceful city with many galleries and great restaurants.
Grand Canyon
Day 19: Pueblo de Taos, Denver
Visiting Taos Pueblo which is the multi-storied adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years. This has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The second part of the day is reserved for the most european city in America - Denver.
Day 20-21: Ghost towns in Colorado
Have a unique chance to feel like living in late XIX century during Gold Rush time. Visit completly deserted towns which a long time ago were the goal of most of the gold diggers.

itinerary - Part 2:   the alternative
Zion National Park, Utah
Day 16: Zion NP, Cedar Breaks

Experience wilderness in a narrow slot canyon. Day 17: Grand Canyon - north rim
Reserve one day to see Grand Canyon the 'unique combinations of geologic color and erosional forms decorate a canyon that is 277 river miles (446km) long, up to 18 miles (29km) wide, and a mile (1.6km) deep. Grand Canyon overwhelms our senses through its immense size.' If you have still some time make a quick visit to Cedar Breaks National Monument or Coral Pink Sand Dunes SP. 
Kodachrome Basin State Park, Utah
Day 18: Bryce Canyon - Hoodoos and forest mixed together, and Kodachrome Basin 
'There is no place quite like Bryce Canyon. Hoodoos (odd-shaped pillars of rock left standing from the forces of erosion) can be found on every continent, but here is the archetypal "hoodoo-iferous" terrain. Descriptions fail. Cave without a roof? Forest of stone? Even photographs strain credulity.' 
On the other hand the beeing in Kodachrome Basin you will have a chance to see how the rocks glitter orange, crimson and mauve colors.
Day 19: Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe bend, Monument Valley 
Exploring a narrow gaps of Antelope Canyon in the morning, and continuing the day with picturesque Horseshoes bend and later with Monument Valley Park where you are experiencing one of the most majestic - and most photographed - points on earth.
Canyonlands National Park, Utah
Day 20: Canyonlands NP
Canyonlands invites you to explore a wilderness of countless canyons and fantastically formed buttes carved by the Colorado River and its tributaries. Rivers divide the park into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze, and the rivers themselves. These areas share a primitive desert atmosphere, but each offers different opportunities for sightseeing and adventure.
Day 21: Dead Horse Point, Arches NP
Start the day by a visit in From the prominence of Dead Horse Point, 2,000 feet above a gooseneck in the Colorado River, an ever changing landscape unfurls. Immense vertical cliffs meet with canyons carved by ice, water and wind creating a visual masterpiece. And later reserve the time for Arches NP and discover a landscape of contrasting colors, landforms and textures unlike any other in the world. The park has over 2,000 natural stone arches, in addition to hundreds of soaring pinnacles, massive fins and giant balanced rocks. This red rock wonderland will amaze you with its formations, refresh you with its trails, and inspire you with its sunsets.
